RICS Course Search

The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors has a comprehensive database of surveying and property-related courses in the UK and abroad. The organisation wanted to deliver these as a searchable CD-ROM and accompanying web site to prospective candidates.

RICS has an in-house new media department who are charged with maintaining and improving the Institution's existing web sites as well as meeting the needs of any new development. As with many in-house teams, they are required to deal with a wide range of tasks which are not always possible to cover with existing staff.

This was the case when they needed to build a new system that would provide an online search of surveying courses at universities from around the world. The web-based system was also to be on a new platform (.Net), so they called us in to help.

As well as developing the web system (shown below) in C# and SQL Server for the .Net platform, we were also appointed to gather requirements, produce wireframes, database schema's and technical specifications.

The CD-ROM system (shown above) was developed in Macromedia Director using a bespoke database and search system which was optimised for speed. Users could search for courses and then view or print a PDF information sheet about the course using the CD.

Finally, we deployed the system to the web site and on CD-ROM. A training component was also included to help bring the new media team up-to-speed with the technologies and techniques used on the project.
